Power Generation & Combined Heat & Power

A site of historic importance, instantly recognisable, which is the home to priceless art work. The Gallery is recorded as welcoming millions of visitors from around the globe each year.

The Objectives

  • Reduce The Gallery’s metered electrical energy consumption taken from the HV grid/District Network Operator
  • Reduce the carbon footprint and associated carbon tax
  • Deliver a viable solution operating within a cost-controlled maintenance regime, with minimal unplanned downtime.

Challenges

  • Investigate the existing High Voltage power use and also the heating network to determine how power could be reliably distributed
  • Assess site electrical and thermal energy consumption – demonstrate projected Return of Investment
  • Installation with minimal disruption to Gallery operations and the visitor experience

The Successful Solution – Gas engine CHP

  • The natural gas-powered CHP alternator generates 850KW at Low Voltage (LV). LV alternator generation chosen due to calculated purchase and on-going service cos, providing improved savings compared to direct HV generating sets (also eases routine access as the set is essentially an LV area).
  • Out of service HV transformer, fully tested, successfully put back in to service on the network to step up and efficiently distribute power for use across the whole site
  • Source / purchase new HV distribution equipment
  • Scheduled whole site power isolation allowing installation of new HV gear
  • Mechanical services, including new roof mounted heat dump rad, gas booster and plate heat exchanger installation
  • Local DNO liaison in application to satisfy G59/G99 requirements for sustained parallel power generation
  • Subsequent site load and harmonic studies
  • Project success! Return On Investment successfully achieved within four years, carbon reduced.
